Pen y Fan – Dawn Awakening

Winter sunrise on the Pen y Fan Massif

Leaving Pembroke at 4:30am getting to the car park for around 6:15am I donned all my winter gear and made my ascent. Many others had the same idea and the mountain side was soon a scene of torchlights in the darkness snaking up the path. It was quite a struggle over halfway when the path was lost and there was a new one to follow, though it was a good 10 or so inches of snow to wade through. Just trudging up, every step sliding backwards slightly, made for frequent breather breaks. Once nearing the top, the sky started to lighten and the snow under foot became icier, this actually made it easier to walk on and offer lots of grip. A sigh of relief greeting the top and the ever impending sunrise. Taking a few snaps, then headed over to the north side of Corn Du summit. Sat waiting for the sun to finally show, bathing the landscape in pinks and yellow tones; snow sparkling in the sunlight.
