Astro & Night Sky Photography  is always something that seems to captivate my audience over the last ten years I’ve been creating night sky images. It’s something different from the norm and thanks to camera and lens development, fascinating and striking images are now not far away from anyone’s reach.
As such I’ve launched my Astro Photography Workshops so you too can learn the unique techniques at capturing those amazing star filled views. These workshops will be run as a small groups of 4 persons. As you can imagine we will be at the mercy of the weather however I will run the evening in partial cloud as it’s good to learn the techniques and you’ll still be able to capture some stars through the clouds. If the weather does look bad, we'll try again the following evening so do keep a backup day handy.

Workshop information

Meeting up as a group at our arranged location, the workshop will start with a brief chat about what everyone's aspirations are for the workshop along with any requests you may have. The workshop will last for two hours and my approach to teaching has always been informal and friendly, helping you to feel at ease and put all of your thoughts into taking great photos.

Emphasis being spent on pre-visualising scenes, composition, looking for interesting aspects to boost your composition, navigating the stars and working with the available sky and correct camera settings.

Full professional tuition and guidance throughout the workshop.

Cover correct camera setting and techniques, composition and using the available light to help you get the very best from the workshop.

2 Hours duration

This workshop is designed for a group size of 4 persons.

The workshop is aimed at all levels of photographic experience. My aim is to get you more accustomed and comfortable with your camera, teaching you how to shoot night skies in some lovely locations.

What to BRING

Digital SLR or Mirrorless camera preferable. Prime/Wide angle lenses that have a minimum aperture of f/4 or faster (eg f/2.8). Sturdy tripod with camera head, fully charged batteries and spares, plenty of memory cards as you’ll be surprised how many photos you take! Optional – Cable Release.

Refreshments, snacks. We are visiting areas where there’s changeable weather and it will be dark so please dress accordingly as you’ll be standing around in the cold. Warm clothing, sturdy footwear, torch with red filter – anything that you need to keep you happy and comfortable for a prolonged time in the great outdoors.

  • Using the right settings to truly capture as much of the night sky as possible.
  • Going over where in the sky to point your lens and finding specific stars.

This workshop is suitable for most levels of fitness as there is only a short distance of walking involved over good pathways from the car park.

Thoroughly enjoyed a really informative night-time photography in South Pembs with Drew. Has given me the confidence to apply the techniques on my own to create really eye catching images. Highly recommended

Had a great few hour with Drew at Green Bridge, trying to capture the rocks and the Milky Way rising above. He clocked my ability as something more than a beginner pretty quickly, and tailored the instruction to something a bit more advanced than I had tried before – exposure blending.

The pre-course communications was excellent, so had exactly what I needed. Drew really knows his stuff, and has a calm manner.

My sons gave me a 1:2:1 session on astro-photography with Drew as a Christmas present. He offered advice, in advance, of what time of year and which part of the lunar cycle would be best. He has an in depth understanding of photography and is a clear and patient teacher.

He pitched the session at my level, pushing my boundaries without overburdening me with information. I learned a lot, better still his teaching method means I remember what I learned. The time flew by and I have some nice photos to remind me of the evening. Thanks Drew, great night

In August we met up with Drew at a beautiful location to take pictures of the stacks in Castlemartin, a great spot to learn all the basics of Astrophotography. The Milkyway was literally in the middle of the frame which produced some great shots!

I'd watched Youtube videos and experimented before but it was incredibly useful learning one-to-one with a professional. The 2 hour lesson was very chilled and Drew was patient with the technical bits, let us use his equipment and also fun to hang out with for the evening. Thanks again!

Had the most amazing night with Drew in Pembrokeshire being taught how to photography the Milky Way. Something I have wanted to do for so long and I wasn't disappointed. Drew is so knowledgeable about the night sky. He teaches in such a way that you understand. Amazing location at Stack Rocks and The Green Bridge, cant wait to go back again and visit for longer.

I can't recommend Drew highly enough as a teacher, thank you so much for making this a great night and filling me with such enthusiasm to go back out and do more astrophotograpy. This wont be the last time i photograph the Milky Way definitely and thanks to Drew I now have a good idea what I'm doing and most importantly where to look. We were also lucky enough to see Noctilucent clouds, something I knew nothing about but would definitely love to see again.
Definitely worth the 6 hour round trip for this workshop.

This is an outdoor photography workshop. Weather can be unpredictable. Drew Buckley accepts no responsibility in the event of any locations being out of sight or the sky clouded over.

Astro Photography workshops will go ahead even if the sky is partially cloudy - however, workshops may be postponed due to windy weather as it makes it near impossible to get good, sharp images due to the fact we'll be relying on long exposures and windy condition can shake cameras too much during exposures. If the forecast does look bad for the planned dates, or too windy - then I will postpone that particular workshop until the following evening, the next day.

Drew Buckley reserves the right to change the details, itinerary or date of any Workshop due to unforeseen circumstances or events beyond Drew Buckley’s control. Any significant changes will be notified to in writing.
