2023 // THE REVIEW

Well, what can I say it’s been another great year! Now into my fourteenth year as a full time professional photographer, it’s definitely one of the most varied and fun ones.

Right from the word go on 1st of January I was out shooting for commercial clients and local businesses. Throughout the year was a real mix of personal work and commissions. The launch of my fifth book ‘Pembrokeshire – Discovering the Coast Path’ in July was well received with lots of copies sold and widespread media coverage. Thank you to everyone who purchased a copy!

Starting the year off how the previous one finished, by carrying on with a photo commission travelling around south Wales’ photographing the four rivers for NRW. In February I co-guided once again with Dawn 2 Dusk on a lovely workshop in Gower. Some strong aurora events in March and April made it possible to photograph the northern lights in Pembrokeshire before spring kicked in and the main bulk of my work started building up. At the same time I started working with Kase Filters and Kingjoy Tripods, which I’m now a brand ambassador for.

Photoshoots for the lovely Folly Farm on their new holiday lodges and writing magazine features, before a nice day out photographing the behind the scenes of filming for Channel 4’s The UK’s National Parks with Caroline Quentin. A full day out on northwest Pembrokeshire shooting the press shots which then were used as the main marketing media for the programme, a very fun afternoon out on the RIB boats off Ramsey – lovely to chat with Caroline throughout the day too, a lovely lady!

Once May kicks in its full steam ahead for another busy season of my Skomer Photography workshops, day trips and overnight stays with our groups. I’ve been running these since 2013 and it’s always a highlight of the year. In between Skomer workshops, I started working as the exclusive supplier of ground based and aerial photography for the lovely Country Living Group; west Wales’s premier estate agent listing the finest of properties to be had in the area, and with the weather good, it was a very busy summer and autumn travelling all over photographing new property listings with some incredible homes! End of June I guided for Canon UK for their CPS programme on a few of their Skomer Workshops and as mentioned above, my latest Pembrokeshire book came out in July so that followed quite a bit of press interviews and correspondence to promote it.

With Skomer tailing off into July we finished up work on our final shoot for the seasonal timelapse of crop at Pembrokeshire Gold, video on my YouTube page and then with summer in full flow I was out and about finishing up photography commissions for Pembrokeshire Coast National Park for their yearly Coast to Coast paper, so you may see some of those images in the 2024 edition! August a busy month with various shoots for NRW mainly around Brechfa, Brecon Beacons and the Usk valley before heading into September with a photoshoot in Gower for BBC Countryfile magazine and then two back-to-back photography workshops for Dawn 2 Dusk in Pembrokeshire and then up to Snowdonia & Anglesey. All the while, I was writing articles for Outdoor Photography and PhotoPlus magazine which most seemed to come out in the autumn, around the time I run my waterfalls workshops in the Beacons. As autumn ends, I generally turn to more of my own work and had some lovely days out photographing short-eared owls before the run up to Christmas starts with some themed photoshoots, but more to come on those soon!

Other highlights were various landscape workshops touring around Pembrokeshire • Magazine front covers and articles written with images featured • Travelling around the country on commissions for national parks and organisations, and many, many more.

Along with all of this we had a whole upheaval at home with building works through most of the spring and summer, a new puppy arrived in June and a few trips away too.

I’ll leave you with a gallery below, featuring a real mixture of shots from the 428,000 images taken from 2023.

2024 is already shaping up to be even more varied and exciting, lots of things planned, new projects and workshops which I’ll be announcing soon.

Lastly a BIG THANK YOU to all my clients and followers this year, wishing you a healthy and happy 2024!
